“In 1901, a sponge diver named Elias Stadiatis surfaced from a Roman shipwreck, gasping that the seabed was full of dead people. What he had actually found were statues. But buried among them — corroded, unremarkable, the size of a shoebox — was something far more extraordinary.”

For two years, the lump of bronze went largely ignored. Then a researcher noticed that it had split open. Inside were gears. Dozens of interlocking bronze gears, more sophisticated than anything the ancient world had any right to produce. The object was over 2,000 years old. It contained technology that would not be matched for another fifteen centuries.

This is the Antikythera Mechanism — and to this day, nobody fully agrees on who made it, why it was lost, or what became of the civilisation that produced it.

Nothing as mechanically complex as the Antikythera Mechanism would appear again until the medieval astronomical clocks of 14th-century Europe. Whatever knowledge produced it vanished completely.

What This Machine Could Do

Imagine holding a device the size of a thick hardback book. On the front, two interlocking dials — one tracking the Egyptian calendar, one marking the zodiac. On the back, a spiral dial counting 223 lunar months. Another tracking 19-year astronomical cycles. Turn a single hand-crank on the side, and the entire mechanism moves: bronze planets shift in their orbits, eclipse predictions rotate forward, the Olympic calendar advances.

The mechanism did not just display astronomical data. It computed it. The Saros dial on the back uses 223 interlocking bronze teeth to model the fact that eclipses repeat on an 18-year, 11-day cycle. The Metonic cycle dial tracks the 19-year period after which lunar phases fall on the same calendar date. These are not decorations. They are working calculations, encoded in metal, accurate to within a fraction of a degree.

82 fragments survive. Researchers believe they account for roughly a third of the original device. What the rest did, we can only imagine.

Four confirmed functions — each one would have been remarkable on its own.

🌑 Solar & Lunar Eclipses

Using the Saros cycle of 223 lunar months (≈ 18 years), the mechanism predicted when and where eclipses would be visible — accurate to the day and approximate hour.

🪐 Planetary Positions

Tracked the positions of the Sun, Moon, and all five planets known to antiquity: Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn. Each moved on separate geared cycles.

🏛 The Olympic Calendar

A dedicated four-year cycle dial tracked the Panhellenic Games — the Olympics, Pythia, Isthmia, and Nemea — used for scheduling across the Greek world.

The 19-year cycle aligning 235 lunar months with 19 solar years — allowing the calendar to synchronise the moon and sun with extraordinary precision over centuries.

From deep water to decoded — a journey spanning two millennia.

c. 150–100 BC The Device is Made

Constructed, most likely on the island of Rhodes — home to some of the ancient world’s finest astronomers and engineers. The level of precision required suggests a tradition of mechanical craft with no surviving predecessor.

A Roman trading vessel — carrying statues, jewellery, coins, and glassware — sinks in a violent storm off the rocky point of Glyphadia. The mechanism goes to the seabed. It will lie there, undisturbed, for 1,965 years.

c. 65 BC Lost to the Deep
1900–1901 The Sponge Diver’s Find

Diver Elias Stadiatis descends to the wreck. His terrified report of “dead bodies” turns out to be marble statues. The bronze lump is recovered with them and sent to Athens, where it sits in storage — largely overlooked — for years.

CT scanning and X-ray imaging by the Antikythera Mechanism Research Project reveal over 30 interlocking bronze gears and thousands of inscribed Greek characters — effectively a user manual. Decoding is still ongoing. New discoveries continue to emerge.

The Questions Nobody Can Answer

The more researchers decode the Antikythera Mechanism, the more unsettling it becomes. Not because of what it reveals — but because of what it implies about everything we thought we knew about the ancient world.

If this device existed, what else existed? If this knowledge was lost so completely that no one even remembered it — what other technologies vanished with it?

I “Was this unique — or were there others?”

The Roman writer Cicero, writing in 55 BC, describes a bronze sphere built by Archimedes that “represented the motions of the sun, moon, and five planets.” This is likely a different device — which suggests the Antikythera Mechanism was not a once-in-history anomaly, but part of a broader tradition of astronomical machinery. A tradition that left almost no trace.

II “Who built it — and why don’t we know their name?”

The leading candidate is the school of Hipparchus — the Greek astronomer from Rhodes who is credited with developing the mathematical models the device relies on. But the mechanism bears no maker’s mark, no signature, no attribution. It was either commissioned in secrecy or the name was simply never considered worth recording.

III “Why did it take 1,500 years to build something like it again?”

The fall of the Roman Empire. The burning of the Library of Alexandria. The medieval church’s relationship with pagan astronomy. Historians offer several explanations — but none fully account for a 1,500-year gap. The more likely answer: this craft was a guild secret, passed down between a small number of artisans, and simply died with them.

IV “What did the missing two-thirds of the device do?”

82 fragments account for roughly a third of the original mechanism. The rest remains on the seabed — or was lost to two millennia of ocean corrosion. Recent modelling suggests the missing sections may have tracked additional planetary cycles. We may never know. The sea has kept its secret.
